1) Afterbuilding my dedicated HT I need to extend my controllers to the seating area from the equipment closet. I found the following options on Amazon. Anybody have any experience with any of these?

2) I also want to hook up my PS2 with component and optical
a) can I use any old optical cable?
b) I know there is a hatred toward Monster (I have it too), but is there any advantage over the basic sony component cables

1. Go for the length you need and don't pay the $21 for Monster.
2.a. If it's a standard optical cable, then yes. There's nothing magical about PS2.
b. Not from what I can see. Monsters look prettier, but they both use small, almost pathetic looking coaxes. If monster was big and beefy, I'd say yes, but in this case they both look quite tiny.

Monster is 3x as much as the rest for a shorter cable? That should be a no-brainer. I don't recall who made the extender I'm using (heck, don't even remember where I got them), just some generic brand & they are fine, I'd probably go with the chepest one.

As for the oprical, any decent one will do; I'm using a basic Radio Shack one with mine & it works fine.

I've used everything from the cheap to the Sony. No real difference in the extension cables for PS2. If your PS2 is in an open spot Pelican has also released some decent wireless controllers for around $25, not recommended if your PS2 isn't facing the seating area though. As for the Optical cable There's no real difference with the PS2. XBOX makes you buy theirs.
