PS2 and Widescreen

I have a Playstation 2 hooked up to my widescreen tv (rear projection), but for some reason it does not fill up the screen all the way. I have set up the PS2 to fit 16:9, but I it's still the same. It's only about 1/2" (inch) off on one side but it bothers me.
Has anyone come across this before?

gamecube and widescreen

same problem with gamecube and widescreen tv . Leaves space
on left side of screen. I have no solution

Does the game support 16:9? Most of them don't. And one or two that say they do still have black bars on sides and/or top.
