PS 3 Storing CD music

We have the 80 gig PS 3.

How big of a deal is it to put all my music CD's into it?

Probably have 300-400 CD's

Ease of use, organizing them, playback ease, etc.

It's easy but I have no idea how many it would hold nor do I understand why you prefer this to playing the actual CD as SQ may suffer. I would dump them into WMP and do a wireless stream to the PS3. This wont help the SQ but will make to easy to play all your music in those non-critical listening times.

My experience is somewhat different, re. wireless streaming. I haven't been able to stream any music through my PS3 yet, not for lack of trying. Sometimes it will detect the servers, sometimes it won't. It should detect 3 servers (laptop, desktop, Fireball). The desktop and the Fireball are hardwired into the network, but the PS3 often fails to find them. And even if it finds them, I can't play the tracks on them.

I don't know why this is, but safe to say I'm not yet a proponent of the PS3's streaming ability. Maybe my wireless network or router is the problem, I don't know yet, but even the internet is excruciatingly slow, like minutes to load a web page.

I don't see any reason not to load the discs right into the PS3. 3-400 discs will probably use 40g or less?

Ummm....I have no issues streaming from my laptop to the PS3 and my internet on the PS3 is fast.

Greg,
What router or network system are you using. Currently, I have a D-link wireless G WBR-1310. It's rated for 54Mbps. Is this adequate for a small house? I am considering an upgrade. I get about 57-60% signal strength at the PS3.

My objective conclusion is that I suck a heck of a lot more than you suck, because your system works and mine doesn't.:D

I get about 80-90% signal strength on average and have had no problem with the PS3 seeing either of my computers, including my laptop from anywhere in the house. I am using a 2-wire router.

I would expect 300-400 CDs to fill up an 80G hard disc unless you use a low bitrate and that kind of defeats the purpose IMO, so I'd have to agree either stream it or use a USB hard disc.

I also use the 2-wire router and get 90% strength. It is jut one room over from my HT set-up which is only about 20 feet away through the wall.

I moved my router into the living room from the back room and the connection is much better. The PS3 browser is much faster. In fact, I'm typing this on the PS3 using the BD remote. I still have to check to see if it will stream media better. That is a feature I'd like to be able to recommend from personal experience.

hard drive space

Does the PS3 require you keep some of the hard drive space free for gaming?? Or does it NOT work that way.??

There are certain games (e.g. Folklore) that require you to download certain data onto the hard drive, I'm assuming to reduce load times and make the games run faster. Naturally if you want to save any game data then you need to leave some space free. Finally, there are so many game updates and add-ons (e.g. Songs for guitar hero, new tracks for Motorstorm) as well as demos of new games that you'll conceivably want to download.

Greg- what streaming program are you using? Is there a good free one or am I going to have to pay for one of the shareware programs?

I don't know if you actually have to have space on the drive available (temporary files?). Some games install data on the HDD, others do not and run entirely off the disc.

I use WMP11 to stream to the PS3.
