PS 3 and True hd DTS MA

Can anyone please tell me if Sony has made it possable to listen to true hd and DTS MA with my PS3 on my Yamaha 3800? If so can you tell me how do I acomplish this? I read an article in the May 08 Home theater magazine that would not send out lossless audio. There was an article on audioaholics that Sony had added DTS MA with the 2.03 update. What good would this be if I can't listen to the losless codecs? I would like to have the 3800 do the processing. Is this possible with the PS3 or do I need to get one of the Panny's to use my 3800 and listen to True HD and DTS Ma?

You can listen to both TrueHD and DTSMA with a ps3. However you have to use the built in decoding. You can't bitstream them and let your reciever decode the format.

I found a site earlier that listed all the ps3's format features. Lemme see if I can find it and post it.

Edit: I found a Nice chart before that listed all the formats and what it can do with them. But I can't seem to find it for anything now.
But a quick google search will turn up any number of forum posts/reviews that will back me up.

The PS3 decodes DTS-HD MA, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Plus internally and sends it out as uncompressed PCM over HDMI only. You will get the same SQ as you would if it occured in the receiver. The receiver's DACs are still being used and all digital post processing is still utilized (such as bass management).

The only thing you won't get is a nice little logo on the receiver that lights up telling you what surround format you are using. Instead it will tell you that you are receiving multichannel PCM.

First I want to thank you guys for the help. One question? Do I turn the PS3 to PCM output and not bitstream to hear lossless audio? Would I then see PCM on my recievers front panel but would be listening to lossless audio? Thanks again

if I understand this correctly, you will want to put the output back to bitstream if you want to get 6.1 tracks from DVD. Otherwise, when outputting as LPCM, the PS3 will downmix the 6.1 to 5.1. Just what I read yesterday.

But that only applies to DVDs, and there aren't that many titles with true 6.1 anyway. Setting it to bitstream would negate the purpose of Hi-res audio playback for Blu-ray discs.

Duh. I was implying that he would want to switch it back and forth. Only in the case if he ran more than a 5.1.

How many titles have DTS-ES discrete surround? Dolby EX isn't true 6.1, it's a matrixed surround correct?

Looks like over 60, just for movies, let alone music. Matrixed versions are still pretty cool, if not as impressive as LOTR EE ES . . .
