I know this has been discussed before I'm just having a hard time locating a thread with the info I need. I have an Onkyo TX-SR605 connected to my ps3 via hdmi and while I know my ps3 (OG version not the slim) supports Dolby Tru HD and DTS-MA via pcm I want to be absolutely sure that I am properly hearing these formats. have two problems.

First: Please can someone tell me (or link a thread) exactly how to set my ps3 audio settings. Bitstream, pcm,(assuming pcm?) ect... also there are 22 audio option boxes in the audio settings and I'm not sure what to check or leave unchecked.

Second: I can't seem to get my receiver to matrix sound to my rear surrounds (I have a 7.1 setup) Can someone with he 605 or something similar please tell me how this is done? Thanks so much in advance.

Go through choose HDMI to output sound when the next screen comes up it will give you the choice to set it manually or auto, choose auto because the PS3 will then talk(for lack of a better word) to your receiver to see what it can do and set the output accordingly. The PS3 will choose the highest format that is available on the disc DD 5.1, DTS, and so forth from the list of formats that your receiver is able to handle.

You need to set the PS3 to PCM since bitstream won't pass the HD audio, only standard dolby digital/dts. Your receiver may or may not be able to apply PLIIx to HD audio sources, you will have to consult your owners manual to find that out. When watching a blu ray on your PS3, press select or info and it will tell you what audio format is being decoded.

OK turns out my problem is in fact that my onkyo can not matrix rear surround channels from a lossless pcm feed. Bummer but thanks for the help

My RX-V663 won't do that either, which is another reason why I haven't gone 7.1 in my bedroom. Looks like you will have to upgrade your receiver if you want that feature, which btw is a very nice feature that I use every time I turn on my main system.

Yeah frustrating thing is I had a denon 790 that had that feature but I sold it last week because it would not allow me to set different crossover points for each speaker set. Oh well live and learn
