Promising Blu-ray disc sales numbers

There are some recent promising signs pointing toward healthy adoption of the Blu-ray format. Apparently, Blu-ray makes up 10-15% of total sales of the recent release of "No Country for Old Men." (Disney)

For "Appleseed Ex Machina" (Warner) BR accounts for 30% of total sales.

While these are only two examples, and too early to forecast a trend, these numbers are apparently larger than were previously typical.

(Disclaimer: I'm getting this from blu-ray.com, but I suspect the figures are accurate.)

I bought both on BD :) For best picture, I was expecting a bit more from NCFOM. I am Legend should have had pretty good numbers as well, as I found it sold out at a few places locally.

Although taken from www.blu-ray.com, the original report is from Video Business.

What should also be noted in addition to the NCFOM numbers, is that they're saying the AVERAGE title is moving between 5-10% of the total disc units.

Go back a year and you're looking at around 1%, with the occasional title like Casino Royale accounting for 3%.

Given that the cheaper players are still a quarter away (Wal*Mart should have a $249 or less Sylvania player on shelves by Q3/08) this is a promising sign for Blu-ray's hopes at mass market adoption.

Just read that BR is on track to sell 15 million units in the U.S. this year. If that holds, total movie disc U.S. market share of BR will be about 1.5% in '08. (Assuming 1 billion for '08 DVD unit sales.)
