sounds to me like dolby's form of lexicon's logic 7. next, hughes or some new start-up will say they've come out with a process where you can get all the 8.1 or 9.1 channels from 2 speakers. then sony/phillips will develop something they say is better, but not compatible. then meridian will say they've figured out how to include the extra 2 to 4 channels into the original multi-channel mix, without losing any quality. it's freakin' endless. sq-vs-qs-vs-cd4, vhs vs beta, DD vs dts, 1080 vs 720, dvd +r/rw vs dvd-r/rw, gmafb..soon you'll sign a contract to buy B&w or martin-logan and the house will be the accessory, and you'll have to have your own personal sub-grade nuclear reactor to generate power for all the amplifiers, (unless the amps are rated in "yamaha power" where 9 individual amps can generate 150w/channel out of 125v-15 amp plug) which 60 minutes will uncover that all the EM from the amps is giving everyone cancer. then the epa will make us go back to 2 channel and turntables or am-radio or worse, srs. sheeeesh. my wife's screamin' pissed with 5 speakers and a sub now. every time another company adds 2 more channels, it costs america's married stereophiles 2 to 3 grand a piece in jewelry upgrades.

I believe you were refering the new Yamaha Z-9 for the power rating. Your numbers are off. They are actually 7 X 170W + 2 X 50 = 1290 W.

The plug can handle 125 X 15 = 1875 W.

Could you explain what is the problem of Yamaha's power rating here ?

Isn't PL II a logic to convert stereo signal to 5.1 channels. PL IIx is what I believe converts stereo and/or 5.1 channels signal to 7.1 channels.

To directly hear from the horse's mouth just click on this link : http://www.dolby.com/consumer/technology/tech_overview.html

On this page, go to the section "Surround Sound Expansion" and find out the facts yourself.
