Projector Mounting: Suggestions

i'm having a little trouble figuring out how to mount my projector. i live in an apt and i dont want to drill holes in the ceiling if i can avoid it. i have seen projectors mounted on shelves which is what i am leaning towards right now. my only concern is the angle that the projector throws onto the screen. this may seem like a lame question but i honestly dont know...can i prop the rear of the projector up to angle the picture down without causing damage? are there any other side effects that may occur from this? i was also thinking i can mount the projector to the underside of a "shelf". which would give me more flexibility? attached are pics of what i am dealing with. thanks in advance :)

I think you have a problem:eek:

Today's solid state projectors don't take kindly to being off axis, or too much above the screen. Some need space behind them for ventilation.
You need to research the projector you are considering how much it will do both direction.
Ceiling mount is not that big of an issue if you have access to the ceiling joists; easy to patch the holes when you move out.
You could also mount it on a table in front?

bummer. that wasnt the optomistic response i was looking for :p

i tried finding a joist but i really dont understand how these apts are constructed. the ceiling is made of ~1/4" plywood with wallpaper covering it. i cannot find joist, or even a stud in the wall:mad:

i was originally going to put it on a table in front of the couch but i have clumsy friends and am scared of beverage spills or tripping over wires.

i think i am just going to try to mount it upside-down on the bottom of a shelf. if it breaks, i guess it will be an expensive lesson. thanks for the advice.

Apartments are rented with the expectation that things will be hung on the wall, etc. Two toggle bolts in the ceiling and two holes is enough to mount a projector firmly. About 5 minutes and some spackle is all it takes to repair the holes. In my old apartment I put up a plasma (4 holes) screen (6 holes), and projector (2 holes) - and my total fine for these holes? $0.00! It is just standard when renting an apartment, that when you move out, they patch and paint. It's quick and easy and not expensive.

If you really want to shelf mount, then you really have to consider the projector you get...

1. Projectors can't be placed wherever you want. Like the zoom on a camera you can only get to close, or so far away, if you want the image to fill the screen.

2. If the projector doesn't have lens shift, than it must be placed a certain amount above or below the centerline of the screen. Many cheaper projectors this amounts to 1-2 feet above the TOP (or below the bottom) edge of the screen for a 100" diagonal screen.

If I were you, I would get a Sanyo Z4 or Panny AE900 and then put it on a shelf. The Z4 has WAY more lens shift which means you can put it almost anywhere on the rear wall without any issues at all (if the distance is right). Both projectors have 2x zoom lenses which is a huge range for projectors, most are about 1.2x or 1.3x zoom. So, for a 100" diagonal, you can put either projector between (ABOUT!) 10 and 20 feet from the screen.

Very cool.

1) i already own an H31, should have mentioned that. you can see it on the table in the second pic.

2) i dont think the 1/4" plywood ceiling can support the weight of the projector and mount, hence the shelf. i can always leave the shelf on the wall when i leave, but trying to patch wallpaper on the ceiling is more than i want to do.

3) shelling out cash for shipping to korea get expensive.

i was hoping there was some alternative method to hanging the projector that i didnt know about. i'll figure something out. thanks again for the replies.
