I have a 11' wide by 20' long area. Where do I find the right seating and projector distance? seating will be a sectional sofa.

Seriously, I have no life.

Once you decide on a projector, the link above will or should give minimum and max distances. You should aim towards the minimum distance.

Depending on screen size, if blue-ray DVD is used, around 12ft +/- seating distance.

I'm certainly no expert on projectors, however optical lenses are usually considered to be more accurate when in the midst of their focal range, and not dialed out all the way on to either ends of the zoom... meaning you would want it somewhere in the middle.

Could be wrong, best to have someone else who knows to confirm or deny.

If it were me, along with what I said above, I would try to closer than farther, for a couple reasons.

Good luck!

If you have no really specific limitations on seating, then you start with THX standards.

THX says that seating should be about 1.5x the width of the screen. If you put in a screen that is about 8.5 feet wide, about 10' or so diagonal, then you will want to sit about 13' from the screen.

The projector distance is ENTIRELY dependent on the projector you purchase and no two projectors are necessarily the same. Many LCD projectors have super zoom range which allows for a 120" diagonal to be thrown from about 12 to 24 feet from the screen. Yet, many DLP models have a very limited range and may only work 14-16 feet from the screen. (lens to screen)

Every piece needs a bit of research, and Projector Reviews, Projector Central, and of course Audioholics, can help you find some information on which projector and screen makes sense.

As an off the cuff recommendation: The Carada Criterion in Brilliant White is a great screen, and you should be pretty happy with the Epson 6500UB projector.

Yeah, it's recommended to be within the sweetspot of zoom. What I have read: closer = brighter. farther = greater contrast.

If you have no . . . *snip*
^everything that guy said.

Optimal depends on a lot of factors. However generally the closer to a screen the brighter the picture. Zooming in will of course also reduce the brightness. As you are spreading lumens over a wider area. Zoom plays very little effect on PQ in most instances. Remember the light is basically being beamed out and the lenses simply refract the light on the screen based on their distance towards each other. So as long as your picture is in focus then the zoom factor doesn't matter as much. I suggest a mid range mount because it gives you maximum screen size flexibility. The Epson 6500 is the way to go as BMX mentioned. Epson seems to have the fewest issues of sub 3000 projectors and I rarely see there PJs on ebay which tells me people don't want to sell their PJs. That being said if budget is an issue Then the Sanyo PLV1080 HD is going for 1500 off amazon. I think we are reaching a bit of a curve off in improvements for a while in PJ technology. At least from the PQ perspective. contrast ratios are just crazy now and 1080p is a standardizing maximum currently.

If you are like me and just too lazy to ceiling mount your PJ. Then any LCD PJ can be easily shelf mounted too. Just train yourself to cover your eyes if you look toward the PJ.
