Projector and Screen for Playstation 3 system

I have very recently acquired a PS3 and would like to set it up with a decent projector and screen.

I have been reading various reviews on Audioholics.com and among the projectors that stood out and were within my price range I saw the Panasonic PT-AX100U, Optoma HD7100 and the Panasonic PT-AE900U.

I need suggestions on better projectors suited for a PS3 and tips on what I should look for in a projector (i assumed that one of the requirements is the HDMI input.. am I right?). Another thing is: do i need one that supports 1080p for best results? I believe 1080p is the resolution of the PS3...

With the current room setup the projector will be ceiling mounted on the back at a distance of about 5 metres from the screen (roughly 16 feet). Is this enough? The size of the room does not allow me to push it much further back than that.

Finally on the question of screens.. will I be doing something very stupid if I buy a decent projector and then use it with a low quality screen, or wont the screen make that much difference?

Anyway.. all tips and suggestions would be appreciated as I'm quite new to display technologies and still trying to learn as I go by.

None of the projectors you listed have any specific advantages for PS3 than many others. That is, they are all excellent projectors.

Since you are a new projector user I would recommend you go with the AX100 projector as it is the most versatile in setup options and therefore, will be the most forgiving if you screw up somehow during the installation.

Do you need HDMI? No, but I wouldn't buy ANY projector without HDMI.

Do you want 1080p compatibility? I don't think that matters at all unless you are buying a 1080p projector. These projectors are not 1080p projectors.

For brightness, quality, and versatility, it's damn tough to beat the AX-100.

Seriously, I have no life.
Depending on your budget and if you are planning on viewing Blu-Ray DVD on it. If the BD is a forgone conclusion, try to get one with 1080p.
Also, projectors have a minimum and maximum distance rating depending on screen size. Another issue is heat and ventilation. Don't place it at the back of the room as it may re-circulate the exhaust back and overheat, shorten the bulb life or total premature failure.

I noticed that Mitsubishi's HC3000 Projector (720P) is $1499 @ BB. That is 1/2
of what it was 1 year ago. Would that be a consideration?

What is most affordable 1080P DLP projector these days?

1080P projectors are still pretty expensive (compared to 720p). I'd wait a couple years until the price drops. The projectors you mentioned put out a great picture, so it's not like you would feel like you're missing out on anything if you get a 720p.

If you're on a budget, you should try making your own screen. You can build one for around $50-100, and the AVS Forums are filled with different methods. You'd end up saving at least $500 this way, maybe even up to $1000, so it's definitely worth a try.
