projection screen vs wall

I am playing with the idea of front projection vs rear projection (DLP). Is a front system even close to the quality in a standard lighted (low light) room?

Is there really a big benefit of a screen vs painted surface (high quality paint) at 10’ or more?

For the same $4000, how do the front vs rear compare?

Fronts don't do well with standard light, unless the screen is rather small. Front projector usually for large screen in light controlled space.
Screens are better than paint, especially when you need gain more than 1 but paint may not even be that, not sure.

Fronts usually have more light, better for ambient light.

People constantly are making their own screens and using paint, blackout cloth, and other options to make their screens. Paint can be very good, but you need to be aware of having a very flat surface for painting.

Goo Systems sells DIY painting kits that have very good reviews. But, also people use different paint combinations that they try out for the best results. Try the Screens DIY subforum over at AVS Forum for some great information on painting screens. Many people go up to 120" diagonal with painted screens.

After seeing a DIY screen compared to a high dollar screen I would NEVER buy a screen again. Unless I needed a lot of gain for some reason.
