Progressive scan problem?

I have a Panasonic DVD S77S progressive scan DVD player. I have it set up to play progressive scan to my Mitsubishi WS48613 HD projection TV via an HDMI-to-DVI cable. What's weird is that it seems to display progressive sometimes and sometimes it's interlaced. With my Ghost in the Shell Stand-alone complex series 1 DVD's, it seems to be progressive. But when I watch disc 1 of the second Stand-alone complex series, it's definitely interlaced. I tried hooking up the player with component cables, just to see if it was a problem with my HDMI cable, but it looked the same.

Today, I noticed interlacing while fast-forwarding sections of The War of the Worlds DVD. I didn't notice anything while watching it, just during fast forwarding or rewinding. So maybe the player doesn't display progressive while scanning.

Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on? I don't see why some DVD's seem progressive and others don't. Progressive scan is in the player and the TV right? It shouldn't have anything to do with the software. I'm totally confused.

HELP!!!

Yes, progressive scan is 'in the player/tv' etc. Have a read of this. It's very informative.

There may not be any probelm. It may well be that when fast-forwarding, the player doesn't deinterlace (assuming progressive scan is selected), but then, you don't normally watch films at such speed, so there's no problem there anyway.:) How did you determine that one DVD was 'definitely interlaced'?

Thanks for the response.

The way I saw the interlacing was in a few scenes of the DVD that is from the second series of Stand-Alone Complex, (2nd gig). There is a scene where the main character and a woman are being chased by a couple of big robots. A couple of times when the robots moved I saw interlacing on their edges. But where it was most obvious was a part where the guy and the girl jump across a gap to escape the robots. When the girl jumps across, the interlacing is so obvious that she looks "see-through". I played the same scene on my older, non-progressive DVD player, and it looks the same. Sure seems like interlacing to me.

I don't get it.

By the way, Ghost in the shell is an animated series. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

When the signal is deinterlaced it should still produce standard quality of picture. You may be seeing other artifacts, not deinterlacing.

Thanks for your response. Sorry, but I don't understand what you're saying.

As I said, the scene I described looked the same on my older DVD player. When the people in the scene jump across that gap, (moving from right to left across the screen), the interlacing is VERY obvious. Like I said, the woman looks like you can see through her.

If this is not interlacing, what else could it be?

Well, since the picture looked good elsewhere in the move except in a few places, The mastering had some issues, maybe a flaw in the transfer at pressing, any number of other issues. Doesn't sound like a flaw in the DVD players as both show the same flaws, right, unless I am misunderstanding this somehow?

Nope. Seems like you've got it absolutely right. The reason I thought it was interlacing is because it looks the same on my old, (non-progressive) player. But it sounds like you're right. I asked some people at work today and they said the same thing. Guess it's just some kind of weird glitch with the disc.

Or a whole run of discs. That happens from time to time like a movie I liked on LD, but on DVD transfer, the audio went mono half way through:mad:

Yeah. When I first bought my Saving Private Ryan DVD, there were a few scenes where the color would get all washed out, like the film was overexposed or something. Kinda like you were looking at something with a lot of glare on it. I returned the first one I got, but the second one did the same thing. I just kept it. Oh well.

Yes, that is a bummer. Before the production line discovers the flaw, may not, a whole bunch are run off. Maybe the makers know this and will replace yours free?
