Problems with Yamaha HTR-5440 Receiver

Hi guys,

So I recently purchased a Yamaha HTR-5440 receiver (it's an older model) with a Sony sa-wmsp1 speaker system and two large pioneer tower speakers. I want to use the two pioneer speakers as the right and left main speakers, and use the sony speakers as rear left, right, and center. I also have a sony subwoofer that I would like to use.

There are Main (A and B) speaker sockets and rear and center speaker sockets below. The Main speaker sockets work fine, and have been tested using several different sets of speakers. However, I can't get the subwoofer or the rear or center speaker sockets to work no matter what I do.

There is no sound that comes out from ANY of the speakers when I do the "test tones" option, not even the main speakers (it may be of note here that "DSP" appears on the display when I do test tones). Additionally, when I have EFFECT = ON (so dolby pro logic is on), the speakers become very quiet, but you can still hear music very softly playing. In other words, the only way I can really hear and enjoy anything is by turning EFFECT = OFF.

I've looked through the Yamaha manual extensively and have made sure there are no menu options that would explain my problems (ie, Subwoofer = Off or something like that). Do you think the receiver is just busted? I am completely puzzled.

Thank you for any help.
Ben

Reset the receiver and set up from scratch.

Assign speakers correctly in the set up menu. The try the test tones. If you don't hear tones from all channels the receiver is no good except as a stereo unit.
