Thedigitalbits guys have reported that they have been having problems with some old Universal DVD titles playing on newer DVD players. Here is there comments:

"One last note today... we've noticed a strange thing here at The Bits. In going back to a lot of our very early Universal DVD releases (released in 1997 and 1998), we've discovered that many of those discs have simply stopped working in our DVD players. We don't know if the discs' bonding layers have gone bad, or if they're simply not compatible with newer players, or what. Affected so far are our original copies of the special collector's editions of Apollo 13, Psycho, Vertigo and others. We recommend that you check the older Universal titles in your own collections for similar problems. Let us know if you're encountering this as well."

They have apparently received a lot of emails with people saying the same thing.

Is anyone having any problems with any old Universal titles? If so you may want to follow that story over at their site.

I bought my first gen DVD player in early 98 and started buying DVDs right away, but I haven't had any give me any problems AFAIK. I most likely haven't been watching the older ones regularly, so now I'll have to check....

I know that Universal was having problems with SACD releases as well, and I had a few discs that had problems from them, including Dark Side of the Moon. All titles pressed by one particular supplier for them had a problem with their blanks and the hubs cracked.
