Problem with Sub, Thoughts?

Talked to my brother on the phone today who was having an issue with his sub. He has an Infinity sub and an Onkyo receiver. A while back he had an issue where the rear right surround would cut in and out. The reciever was under warranty and he sent it to be fixed. Turns out there was an issue that needed to be soldered to resolve that problem with the reciever.

Now he is having an issue with the sub. The light on the sub which is green when it is active keeps flickering from red to green every 5 to 10 seconds with a clicking sound. The light stays on but changes colors which leads me to believe it is a signal flow problem because constant power is still being supplied. I had him change out the audio cable but still the same thing. I then wondered if he switched it from auto to always on if that would help but this sub doesnt have that feature.
Thoughts?

Have him try sending the signal from a different preout other than the sub pre out. If it is a signal issue with the LFE channel only, then that might tell you (unless all the preouts do the same thing because it is a problem with the receiver). It could also be a problem with the sub's amp.

I had him disconnect the sub from the receiver. He ran the dvd player with pre outs directly into the sub and played a cd. The sub light still switches from green to red repeatedly and makes a clicking sound with some static.
