problem with sound output

I have a Sony 400 dvd player and a Denon 3808. I have audio connected with fiber optic cable. I have Denon set, in DVD mode, to use auto settings for decoding sound. When I choose 5.1 output on movie, the Denon wants to treat it as a stereo signal only and convert it to 5.1. Blue light is shown on dvd player to represent 5.1 signal going out? What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like the DVD player is set to output PCM. It needs to be set to Bitstream (sometimes labeled 'raw') if you want the receiver to do the decoding.

Yes, this does seem to be the case, now that you mention this. I do see pcm on Denon screen. I found the setup menu and I have digital showing up on dvd screen now. Audio fixed. The choices were l/r audio, digital output, digital and 5.1. I chose digital. Next was D-PCM or Dolby Digital. I chose DD. Next was DTS, D-PCM or DTS. I chose DTS. Thanks

I have one other question.
interlace or progressive?

What kind of TV? If it is a CRT you have to use interlaced.

If it is a digital TV you have a choice:
- If you set the dvd player to interlaced then the TV will deinterlace (convert to progressive).

- If you set the dvd player to progressive then the TV will only have to scale the image. I use the progressive setting.

It's one of those cases of which device does a better job of deinterlacing. Sometimes I can't really see any difference.
