Hey All,

I am having this strange issue with my Onkyo receiver.

Occasionally, it just drops video over HDMI. Sometimes, it just comes back on by itself in a 1-2 secs, sometimes I have to switch the source back and forth and it works.

Is anyone else also facing this issue?

My 885 does something like that as well. When switching between HDMI and non HDMI sources, monitor either shows 'Non-compatible video signal found' error message or fuzzy screen but audio is fine tho.

So I was just watching this movie and suddenly it just drops signal :( Once it just picked it back up. On another occasion it just sat there and I had to switch the source.

Since I have bought a refurb, I am wondering if this is a firmware issue or something :( Do you know how to check and update firmware??

I am thinking about taking it to a local service center. I keep you posted.

I had this issue with my 805 and what I found is the HDMI input that kept losing the signal was the problem. You see the HDMI cable would just hang, and the weight of the cable was just enough to cause a loose connection of one of the pins in the HDMI port causing the loss of signal. So I took some twist ties and supported the cable so that it ran direct into the reciever with no sag (the sag came after the twist tie, tied to the gear rack) anyway by having the HDMI cable go straight in with no resistance, this cured the loss of signal and I never had that problem again. When I did have the problem I would have to unplug and plug the HDMI to get it working. But once the cable was secured it worked and have never had the loss of signal ever again. So give this a try, it's cheap and you have nothing to lose by trying it out.

HERE is a link to the AVS thread dedicated to firmware issues/updates with the 885/9.5 and the other Onkyo/Integra receivers.

Here are the instructions on how to check your firmware from that page:

Check Your existing Main firmware version:
=> Turn on Your unit, push & hold "Display", press "Standby", release buttons
=> To see additional firmware infos (DSPs etc) press button underneath "Tone" repeatedly ( don't wait to long)
Onkyo / Integra have told us, that these updates should not be installed if Your current firmware to start with for 905 / 8.8 is below 1.05 or 875 / 9.8 / 885 is below 1.04 (same seems to hold true for the 805/7.8).

I'm not sold that this issue is with your 885 unless you have one of the pre 1.4 firmware versions. There is a very long thread on the 885 on AVS also and most of the "drop" issues were audio related when changing channels with dolby endcoded sound. The old firmware would take severals seconds to lock on.

I've had mine for over a year now and I have done all the firmware updates and have had good luck with this unit. I have a few questions that may help figure out where the problem is coming from.

What are you using for a display? What is the source you were using when the drop occured? Does it do it with other sources or just that one? Did you try a different HDMI cable?

Video signal drops out only when I switch between HDMI(HD cable box, PS3) and non-HDMI (CD, S-video compnent).

I think you meant your Onkyo PR-SC885P Surround Processor or Pre/Pro. ;)

And yes, it does that sometimes. It's all about HDMI small mishaps or mischievous frivolities, due to compatible acceptance. ;)
