Problem with Kenwood VR-716 Receiver

Hello: I have a Kenwood VR-716 Receiver that has treated me well. Within the last couple of months I continue to have a problem with the receiver shutting off and going into standby mode while playing a DVD movie. Does anybody have any ideas as to what my problem may be? I appreciate any and all information. Thanks

Double check your connections, be sure there are no shorts in the speaker wires. Check to make sure your speakers are not damaged (a shorted driver could cause the receiver to shut down. Try listening at different levels of output and see what happens. Does the receiver only shut off during dynamic passages on your DVDs, or just during normal dialogue? How long does it take for this to happen in most cases?

I have checked the connections and one of the speaker wires was a little "frayed" so I have fixed it and all the others look good.
I am not sure how you would check if the driver is shorted on one of the speakers as you suggested. I have noticed that when I do a testtone of the speakers, my subwoofer does not put out the amount of sound like it used to, and I have it turned all the way up to 10db.

It does not seem to have a specific time when it shuts down, just random times. As far as time to shut down, not real sure, but it seems like it will shut down 10 to 15 minutes after starting a movie and then just whenever.

If you have noticed a decrease in output from the subwoofer it's possible there is a short somewhere there. Is the subwoofer passive or active (power self contained or is it powered by the receiver)?

I would say the subwoofer or receiver has a short with the subwoofer section. Try disconnecting the subwoofer for a while and see if that changes anything. I would suggest replacing the whole receiver in the near future and getting a powered subwoofer as well.
