Hi all,

I'm having a problem with my Sony STR DA50ES receiver. When I play a movie in my DVD player (connected whith optical cable to the receiver) there is no sound from the tvo front speakers, only from the center, reares and the sub. This does not happen when I whatch TV witch is connected through analog input. When I connect the DVD with analog cables the fronts come alive. I allso tryed changing the optical cable and tryed a coax cable but nothing happens.

Has anyone experienced something like that ? Is the receiver damaged ?

Regards, Thordur

I would review the setup in the DVD player to make sure that for both Dolby Digital and DTS it is set to "Bitstream" so that the receiver does the decoding.

Hi, all the settings on the DVD are correct, I even connected another DVD player to the receiver an the problem was still there.

For the reciever, the "Source" setting is at "Auto" ?

Yes, the source is set on Auto, I have allso tryed all kinds of other sound fields with same results, if I turn off the Sound Field there is no sound coming from the speakers at all. If I turn up the volume to max I can hear some sound from the speakers. But it is very low.

This is a HTIB, I guess, is it new? It has never operated properly with digital sound and you have tried both coax and optical...

my advice would be to bring it back to the seller.

Well it is not new about 5 years old, but it has worked fine until one day when I was watching a movie.

Are your main speakers, by any chance, connected through the subwoofer. I mean, are your speakers all connected directly to your receiver, or does your subwoofer receive the main receiver output and then feed the speakers?

No all the speakers are connected directly to the receiver, I connected the main fronts to the B conncectors on the receiver, to rule out the speaker connectors, but still no sound from them when using digital signal.

If you're getting sound from the center, rears, and sub then you DVD player isn't the issue. I would also say the digital decoder and DSP chip has to be good to get sound from the other channels. It has to be a bad audio codec on your digital board. Looks like it's time for a new receiver.

Yes I'm afraid of that :-( I'm still going to see if it can be fixed. Thanks for your help.

Hmm

If the codec is what is wrong, your older movies that have worked before should still work.

This is really strange :| It suddenly started working again and worked fine for a month and then started again with the same problem. I'm wondering... could the reason for this behavior be because of heat ? Because the unit is in a rather small plase with a DVD player siting on top of it.

Hi,

just to cross-check everything properly, I'd have a look on the A/B speakers switch, as normally all Sony receivers does have that option.
Perhaps the switch is set to B, while your main fronts are connected to A??

Cheers / Avliner.

No, the switch is set to A and the speakers are connected to A. I even tried switching the speakers to B and set the switch to B but that did not help.
