Problem With Component Hookup

Hi folks. Hopefully someone here can help me.

I just tried to hook my DVD up to my TV with component cables. I was formerly hooked up with S-Video (and am again due to my problem). When I hooked them up, I got an overpowing red color on the screen. I double checked that they were hooked up to the matching terminals, and in firmly. And I tried a second set of cables with the same result. Trying to adjust the color on the TV had no effect. The composite and S-Vid hookups work fine.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help you guys might have.

is your tv HD...or just one that has component hookups?

Are you using the proper cable? What cables are you using?

Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you.

Does your tv set have red/green/blue rca females in the back, or red/white/yellow rca females? Unless you have r/g/b "component ins," you won't be able to take advantage of the component video processing. Toshiba calls that input "colorstream" on their standard definition crt tv sets.

Yes, the TV has the proper component inputs, and I'm using Acoustic Research branded rgb cables. The TV is not HD. I suspect it's probably a bad output on the DVD or a bad input in the TV, but was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue that was an easy fix.

If your TV is not HD then you might be having the problem that your dvd player has a default setting to output component as 480p which your tv can't receive. Check your manual and see if there is a way to set the component outputs to use 480i so your tv can accept them. Had the same problem with an Apex flat screen and my samsung dvd player, it was just a switch on the back that allowed selection of Progressive scan or interlaced.

Hmm - Im thinking the obvious...
Setting within the DVD player has to be changed for component output over the S-Video?

Your going component - component? No SCART involved?

Check to see if in the DVD set-up menu there is a selection for Progressive/Interlaced scan. Make sure it's set to Progressive.
Also check the back of the player for a manual switch that would do the same thing.

I'm with Azz123. I recently hooked up a player and got the same thing until I went into the setup for the player and switched it from s-vid to component. Some players do this automatically, some do not.
