Problem with an older receiver...boggles my mind!

First off...I just wanna say thank you to anyone who tries to help, Im new to the board and hope to learn a lot!

I have a simple 5.0 setup with 2 large JBL Floor units connected to a JVC 5060B 5.1 Receiver. I noticed recently that my rear speakers were not generating any sound. I pulled the unit out to reveal the rear connection to my wall-plate wear dislodged (I have a pre-wired home but only use the pre-wire for the rear speakers). I re-connected them and viola the rear speakers came to life!

I then looked at the receivers display pannel to see that while the boxes that represent the connection to my speakers was lit for L-C-R-LS-RS-LFE (normal) but the input signal light reads C-LS-RS-LFE (not normal) while Im in any surround setup (stereo, DTS, Dolby, Auto...everything) and from every input (Coax DVD, Optical DVR, Composit HTPC) it shows the same lack of input to the front two speakers. When watching anything with 5.1 I hear what sound like a lot of loud ambience from the front units, almost like it doubling the rear inputs to the front outputs.

I have tried complete re-set of all the settings, unoplugged it for hours and removed and re-plugged all my connections. I also switched the inputs from optical to coax and vise-versa for my DVD and my DVR, with the same results.

Lastly, I noticed that when in the speaker setup menu, I cannot change the front speaker size from LG-M-SM....I was able to do this when I bought it 2.5 years ago. What to do? Any ideas?

Front L and R should always be on. Check the settings to see if it's forcing output to certain channels. Some receivers do that.

Also, try hooking up other speakers to your front line outputs. See if you get input with a different set.

A couple of things to check:

1. Make sure the fronts are actually connected to the front speaker outputs of the receiver and not the 'B' speaker terminals if the receiver has A & B outputs.

2. If it does have A & B outputs, make sure it is set to 'A' and not 'B' or 'A+B'.

3. If the receiver has a tape monitor switch, press it to make sure it is not engaged; otherwise, it will be redirecting the front output to the tape outs and if no tape recorder is present you will hear nothing.

If you have a 5.0 setup (no subwoofer) then the receiver probably automatically sets the fronts to Large and redirects any LFE (.1) to the fronts and that is why you can't change it.

Nemo: Ive looked through all the settings and as far as I can tell there is no channel redirection options...its a rather simple unit. To clarify, the speakers are on and receiving a signal, but is sounds like the LS+RS and not L+R signals. According to the receivers display, it is not receiving a signal that includes the front two channels. I have used other speakers with no change, as well as hooking those speakers up to another system I have, again working fine.

MDS:

This unit doesnt support multi-room speaker systems with A-B. The connections to the front speakers never changed between when it was working with all 5 channels and now. I havent seen anything like a "Tape Monitor" since I think it limits the record functions to the Tape/CDR input which I dont use, but Ill check the manual again. You are probably right about the front speakers being perma-set to large as they are receiving the LFE signal as well.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
