Hey guys just a quick question. Currently, i would say 1 in 5 movies require that I take a significant hit on video quality when ripping with DVDshrink even when i reauthor and cut out all extras and menus. Preferrably i would like DTS in those movies that support it but in the case that they dont, if i rip the movie with the english 2.1 track in stereo as opposed to the 5.1 or DD will my reciever when set to PRO LOGIC II be able to produce quality 5.1 surround accurately? if so i can probably boost the compression ratio or reduce it rather to very minimal so that i can get the best quality out of the dvd video.

Basically long and short of it is, can PLII or PLIIx do the job of DD? if not ill take the hit on the video quality, most often i cant see the difference on a 27inch TAU :p

I have been ripping them for a while, and I haven't really noticed any reduction in vid quality. Maybe its because I'm using progressive scan? I always get rid of the stupid french and spanish crap though.

Ditto. But to answer the first question no, DD 5.1 is 6 discretely recorded channels. PL II takes two channels (stereo) and process it into a 5.1 system. There is a BIG difference in sound quality. As an example take your favorite DVD recorded in DD 5.1 and switch back and forth between the two formats. Let us know what you think. :)
