I missed the boat on the NAD as its no longer being made and its replacement is $300 more :( .. I didn't want to look at cheap fully automatic turntables from Sony or JVC. So I went snooping around some nearby audio shops and found a store that sells Pro-ject turntables. From what I've read on them, they are now the biggest manufacturer of turntables worldwide and I was looking at the Pro-ject3. Has anyone here have experience with Pro-ject, more sepcifically the Pro-ject3?

If you don't mind going used, you could consider an Empire 598 Mark II or III. Very well built, mechanically, and cosmetically beautiful(too me, at least). Has an auto arm lift/stop, full suspension, and is heavily built. Can be had typically for about $400 in near mint condition on Ebay. Here are a couple of pictures:

Own a Pro-Ject Debut I

Hi.

I've had a Project Debut I (I think the ancestor to the III) for about 5 years and I absolutely love it. It is so basic, and sounds exceptional for the price. I would highly recommend that turntable. They used to be available with a wood base - not sure if that's an option anymore.

I previewed a Pro-Ject Debut III when I previewed the Rega. I was really impressed with the Pro-Ject and only chose the Rega over it because of even better soundstage presentation and tighter source integrity. I don't think you will do wrong with that debut. Of course, the cartridge you get with it will have alot to do with it's final presentation.

Hi Audio Archer,

I do own a Project Debut III which is just 5mnths old and to be frank and honest I am not delighted with the product.Reasons are few:

1)I do get a rumbling sound which seems to be on the higher side in comparision to a Pioneer & Technics old 2nd hand model which I own.By the rumbling sound I mean as the record is played and there is a gap between 2 tracks u hear some unwanted noise(which can only be heard at a higher volume though) which I don't appreciate of.Even when the song is played one can make out if he has a good ear there is some unwanted noise in the backdrop.

2)The earthing sound also is higher in comparision to other brands. It can be heard if the volume is put on high without playing a vinyl.Though the reason could be I connect a pre amplifier to the amplifier with this TT.

3)The bass of Ortofon OE5 the default cartridge supplied with this TT is much more than the treble.

Can you please revert back on these?
