Presence vs Preference

Hello to all,

Would like to have the difference between the Preference and the Presence speakers explained, and when would one use one or the other. Also what type of speaker would be used. Could I just utilize another pair of surrounds as Preference or Presence and what type, i.e. 2 way, 3 way would be used.
New to Home Theater and would like to learn. Thanks to all.

Never heard of 'preference' speakers. 'Presence' speakers on the other hand are a Yamaha innovation that are used by their Cinema DSP modes. They are usually placed above and just outside the main speakers and the DSP modes route sound to them to create a more enveloping sound field.

You can use whatever speakers you prefer, but with HT it's usually best to use all speakers from the same line within a brand so they are voice matched; ie they have the same timbre.

The term "preference" refers to the fact thay you may "prefer" ths sound of one speaker to another. In such case, you should choose that one, not one that others day you should buy. You're the one that's gonna have to live with it, not them. Would you let others choose your wife for you?
