I was reading my Yamaha RX-V661 7.1 manual (Yes, I read manuals) before setting up my HT system. They talked about the presence speakers. They described them as the ones you put above the front Left and Right. The Specs says there 7 channels X 90 watts. but the presence speakers would make 10 including the Sub

Yamaha RX-V661 web site (Can't leave link)

On page 12 it shows the setup and includes 10 speakers including the Sub. The specs say there are only 7 amp channels?

What are the Presence speakers driven by and why would I want them? Is it worth spending the extra money to have them on my 7.1 setup? My other AV Reciever a Denon AVR-687 7.1 manual doesn't mention them.

The Presence speakers are used when you select the Yamaha DSP sound fields. They allow you to expand the sound of the fronts and "lift" dialog in movies.Unless you use the Yamaha DSPs',the Presence speakers will not output sound.
Some people like the Presence effect, some are lukewarm on it.You will have to try it to see how it sounds to you in your particular set-up.
You don't need the Presence speakers to match the others,as they carry much less sound information.

Yamaha features

You Yamaha can drive a 7.1 system OR 5.1 + presence speakers. Some people like the presence speaker feature. Experiment with an extra pair of bookshelf speakers if you are interested.
