What are presance channels exactly. I see them mentioned on yamaha reviews occasionally. how do they work?

Presence channels are additional channels which are not encoded on the DVD, but which a Reciever, through the use of it's DSP effects, uses to enhance the listening experiance by providing a greater depth/realism to the front soundstage.

I think the intent was to add width to the soundstage. I found the presence channels to be quite distracting in my friend's setup, as did he. Yamaha is the only one that has this, AFAIK.
