Just a quick question, I am using the preout on my marantz to drive my Behringer A500 amplifier for my L/R Floor standing Paradigms. What I am wonder is if I can now use the Marantz L/R from to play another set of book shelf speakers to complement the floor standing ones.

Let me know

I think in most cases, the preouts are active regardless of what is connected to the amp section. So in the absence of specific knowledge of your model of Marantz, I vote yes.

So you're using the preouts of a receiver to drive an external amp, which then drives your Paradigms. And you want to know if you can simultaneously use the L/R speaker level outputs (i.e., the amplified outputs) of that same receiver to drive a different pair of speakers?

There should be no problem in doing that from the receiver point of view (unless, I suppose, you were driving a terribly difficult load).

Now, if you're going to drive two pairs of speakers (four speakers total) at the same time in the same room, many are of the opinion that you will lose imaging since each pair of speakers is rather designed to run on its own.

So, while the particular application may or may not be suboptimal for one's given preference, I don't think there should be any trouble with using your receiver in that way.

Good luck!

Don't ask why, but in my yamaha manual I think it says that if you use the preouts, you shoudn't be running the speaker outputs at the same time.

I do not understand but I am only saying what was written. I'll try to locate the paragraph at home.

I can't see a reason why this could not be done.
In effect you're biamping using the reciever and external amp.

Thanks all you guys, will go and try it and see if it works. My reason for wanting to try this is that. the other day I became curious and decided to listed to my titans that I used as rear speaker in my 7.2 system a replace the two floor standing spakers and they actually sounded better to me. I dont know why but they did. my floor standing speakers are paradigm phantoms.

The titans just had better imaging, clarity and headroom. so I thought that I would try using all four.

The titans driven by the marantz own amp and the phantoms with the Behringer A500 amp.
