I have a Cerwin vega VE-8 speaker that the terminal plate/crossover got messed up & I can not find a replacement. So, I bought a terminal plate to replace it but, it doesn't have a crossover. Can anyone tell me the best prebuilt 2-way crossover for these speakers? I've researched everywhere & it seems to be a lot of opinionated responses about preference & speakers that have gotten mixed responses! So, if anyone can tell me the best choice of a prebuilt crossover it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Crossovers are designed for a particular set of drivers in a particular cabinet. So, there is really only ONE crossover that is meant to work correctly with that speaker.

You can not use generic crossovers. You need to buy a used one on eBay or get the circuit from Cerwin Vega and build it. I can not find a circuit for it.

Yea I haven't been able to find one for it! That's why I asked what would be the best suited prebuilt crossover just based on the stats of the speakers? I really don't understand that much about speakers but, surly their is a suitable prebuilt crossover that would sound close to the original?

So the speaker drivers tested okay after the crossover and terminals got "messed up"? What does messed up mean? Got pics of the terminal/crossover?

Seems they still sell these speakers, have you contacted Cerwin Vega customer service directly?

ps okay, they seem to be not sold now that I drill down a bit but still worth as Mr Boat said, see what technical assistance at least can be offered. Build your own if you need to....

Years ago, I needed a replacement driver for an older CV speaker. I emailed CV and the person I corresponded with, was able to give me a cross reference. At the very least, shouldn't an electronics tech be able to dissect a crossover and reproduce it?

No there will not be. The crossover slopes have to take into account the accousic slopes of the drivers, their impedance curves and sensitivities.

All drivers are very different. You never get two drivers alike unless they are the same manufacture and model number. You must use the original crossover circuit or the speaker will sound awful. If the slopes are wrong you will blow up the tweeter as well.

See if Cerwin Vega can supply you a new one. If you can get the circuit I can build you one.

Was this speaker one of a stereo pair? If so, I think you could reasonably duplicate the XO in your other speaker (or if you still have the faulty one).
Someone call me out if I am mistaken!!!

It's got wet when we moved. The drivers are still fine but the crossover must have still had moisture on it bc it smoked & the speakers didn't play again. But, I removed the drivers & pluged them in straight to the input to test them & they both played fine. I was just planning to purchase a prebuilt crossover since I couldn't find the correct CV crossover to swap it. But, I don't know what specs would work for a replacement crossover?

Also, I have 1 other question that's been on my mind the last few months. I read that Dolby surround sound sends below 80hz to the sub (at least for the surrounds). Is that the case of i have full range surrounds & my receiver set to full range surrounds or just if they are smaller speakers? I only ask bc I had planned on buying full range speakers to use in the surrounds of my 7.2 onkyo but, if the audio will not send below 80hz to the surrounds then that's an obvious waste of money & I'll pass on that. @ the moment I have the CV VE-5m shelf speakers as surrounds & they work great but, if i can get more sound with full range then I'd like to upgrade them. According to what I read sounds as if no audio below 80hz is sent to the surrounds tho

@Gregtc420 these are the types of "stats" you need for the drivers to calculate cabinet/crossover with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiele/Small
Thank you! Yea I'm not really that far along in audio & circuit building lol hence why I said surly their is a prebuilt crossover with close to the same specs that would work. I was under the impression the the Xover just sent one set of freq to the tweet & the lower set to the woofer bc it appears to just be a few capacitors behind the terminal plate & nothing else? Which from what I read everywhere else that's not really even a crossover & it's just a quick cheap way to limit freq to the tweeter but, it sounds as if it's much more in depth?

Me either, and as TLS pointed out, there are other factors involved, too. Why would there be this ideal/suitable crossover for your drivers/box just sitting around? Why would someone want to even figure out which one might be most appropriate with almost no information to go on?
