One of the biggest sacrifices made when using separate amp and preamp is the loss of the headphone output. Every preamp should have a headphone output. Not only that, but the better ones should have a means of blending the two channels to reduce the extreme separation that often infects headphone listening. Since the headphone will not be driven by the power amplifier, it's possible to put a separate volume control for the phones next to the jack.
