Hi, I recently acquired a MX 70b sub. I have two big front JBL speakers with built in powered subs, with a decent Kenwood receiver. My question is how can I get more power to the subs? Especially the separate MX 70b? Do I need a preamp to boost the power? We watch a lot of movies and I'm trying recreate bold movie theater sound with older components that I have. Thank you for any all suggestions!

Powered subs are limited to, or by, the power generated by their own internal power amps. If you want more "kick", you need bigger subs.

Now, I'm not familiar with any JBL speakers with built in powered subwoofers. I HAVE heard of powered JBL speakers, though. I've also heard the term "subwoofer" bandied about incorrectly quite a bit recently when the proper term used should be simply "woofer".

What model numbers are these speakers of yours?

A preamp won't do anything for the sub, nor will an amp, as Markw points out. The M&K sub has its own amp and it won't go any louder than what it is capable of now. How do you have it connected and how did you adjust the output of the sub?
