Preamp/amp problem no front left speaker sound

I cannot get sound out of my front left speaker, all other speakers work when I run the Yamaha manual set up Test mode.

I have just installed my new system. I have a Yamaha RX-V2079 AV receiver, front speakers, centre speaker, surround speakers and 2 sub woofers. I have a Luxman M-O5 power amp with a Luxman C-O5 preamp that I have had for ages and wanted to hook this up to the Yamaha to give it some nice grunt to the front speakers.

The preamp is connected to a CD player via the DAD left and right connections so I can play music via the power amp unit only (2 channel goodness). I use the C-O5 'Line' position on the preamp connecting to the 'Front' Pre out on the back of the Yamaha unit. When I run the manual set up Test Run all speakers work except the front left, I have no sound whatsoever. So I can't even get to stage one to set up the new unit to play some blu-ray movies..... most disappointing.

The speaker works fine, new speakers and they work when I just use the amp/preamp configuration with the cd player. The preamp is sending sound to the left speaker when I am listening to music, it's not mono so from what I understand the preamp is sending the left and right sound information to those speakers.

Also I do not get front left speaker sound sound when I am playing the cd player too the Yamaha unit via a Toslink connection. I have connected the front speakers directly to the Yamaha unit and the front left works. When I have the pre/amp connected to the Yamaha the right volume needle moves indicating the sound but the left does not budge on the power amp, so no sound is getting pushed out on that side.

So at a bit of a loss, I am guessing it's a connection issue but I have zillion time checked the connections to the outs and ins, + and - connections and they all line up. red with red + with + etc.

/me scratches his head.....

I'm confused by your set up. The way it is written it sounds guaranteed to blow something up. I suspect you have blown something up and invalidated your warranty.

If you want to add an amp, you do not need to add a preamp.

The only way to do this is to connect the right and left front pre outs, to the inputs of the Luxman power amp. You can only connect one set of speaker terminals to a speaker, anything else will cause serious damage.

So you have only two choices here. Use the Yamaha only, or use the Yamaha and only the Luxman power amp connected to the pre outs. In the first case all speakers are connected to the Yamaha and in the second the front left and right speakers are connected to the Luxman.

Now get rid of the Luxman and connect the speakers to the Yamaha. If you don't hear sound from the left front speaker, then you have blown up your Yamaha and need a new one.

From you rambling post I'm pretty sure you don't have a clue and have caused this.

Take the power amp out of the mix. Connect all the speakers to the receiver. That is the first step in troubleshooting the problem.

Agree. You've got so much crap in the mix it's impossible to isolate the problem.

First, ditch the preamp. The receiver has it's own preamp and trying to add another doesn't add any "grunt".

Like FMW said, go back to using just the plain receiver. Then, you can add one other component at a time, starting with the front R/L power amp.

Again, ditch that preamp.

As stated in the op I have connected the front speakers at one stage to the Yamaha trying to isolate the problem and as mentioned in the op all speakers work including the front left. You would have known that if you actually bothered to read the op................ just saying.

Thanks I will remove the preamp out of the equation sounds like it is the problem for sure. I will have to have a chat with the specialist shop owner who I bought all the gear from and informed me I could use the preamp/power amp on its own by using the DAD mode selection and listen to CD's (thus isolating the Yamaha unit) without needing or turning on the Yamaha unit, and turn the preamp to line mode to have the preamp/power amp work with the Yamaha when I wanted to watch movies. So in essence the power amp was always connected to the front speakers and the preamp was the conduit between the cd player for listening to music or the Yamaha unit for watching movies.

I will make the alterations tonight and let you know how I got on. Thanks for the input folks.
