Pre/Pro or Receiver

I am kicking around the idea of upgrading from my trusty Yammy RX-V659 due to its lack of HDMI support. I'm using it as a pre/pro with an Emo UPA-5 so my options are a new receiver from one of the usual suspects ($500) or a UMC-1 ($700). What does that 200 bucks get me? Dolby Volume would be nice. The downside is, with a receiver I'll have back up if something goes wacky with my amp and, from what I understand Logitech doesn't have the codes for the UMC in their database (harmony one) which will be a pain to set up manually. I'm in no hurry but I'd like to get some feedback.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using an AVR as a pre-pro. I've seen brand new AVRs on amazon and other places that are on sale for 50% off and more.
