I am geting a pair of def tech 7001sc's and they suggest up to a 600 watt amp. i want a stereo amp hopefully in the 2-400 watt rang with a pre/pro that supports 7.1 surround as i am planning on slowly adding spekers as money allows. I have no idea where to start, and up untill now i have just used recievers, but i feal i can benifit from the increased power and modularity of sepperates. any advice will help.
thx inb advance dannv.

The 600W rating is the maximum power handling. You don't need to use 600W to drive it. In fact, you'll probably never give it more than a 100W-150W maximum when there's a super huge explosion in a movie. Here's a good reference link: SPL Calculator. You should aim for peaks maximum movie levels around 95dB (average sound of 75dB + 20dB for peaks) as 85dB and higher will damage your hearing permanently.

The AV123 bridgeable power amps and Outlaw monoblocks may be good choices for you.

great idea thanks i think 200 watt monos will be plenty, that and a 990 processor and i will be ready to go, i also liked the modular one but it seems a bit more expensive for the matching processor
