pre outs

I have a yamaha htr-6090 avr and was wandering if anyone knows what speakers the surround pre out controls

Do you mean the female RCA's or the binding posts? Unless you're using an external amplifier the pre-out's don't do anything. If you're talking about the binding posts then the binding posts labeled "surround" would be for the surround speakers.

Pre outs doesn't control any speakers that are connected to the unit. They send a line level signal out to an external power amplifier, which in turn has speakers conneced to it.
