Pre-amp tuner questions

I'm trying to finsih off putting my system together. I have four original AR-9's that I am currently putting new surrounds in. I have 2 Adcom GFA-555's to power them with.

What I am looking for now is a pre-amp, or tuner/pre-amp to tie it together. I have been looking at the Adcom GTP-600's(my price range), but was wondering if I should buy a seperate tuner and pre-amp? I understand wanting to have separate amplifiers from other components, but with a tuner and pre-amp, are you talking about the same issues?

Any advice would be great, and if you have an opinion on other pre-amps/tuners, I am open to hear your suggestions also.

Thank you in advance,

Josh

I like tuner/preamps. I have a NAD 1600 which I love.

The only thing they lack is a power amp. They are both low current devices so they can share one modest power supply and there's no negative effects to both being on the same chassis that I've ever noticed.

One good effect I've noticed is that I was able to "grow" the poert stage by simply buying a different amp unplugging the old power amp, and plugging in the new power amp. Viola! Instant upgrade to whatever power amp you want.

You might wantto scour the used market for an Adcom 500 or so. Afterthat, they lostthe phono stage. If you don't mind brand mixing, (miscegenation isn't against the law in audio) NAD 1600/1700s are fine performers and the tuner is somewhat better than that those on the Adcoms due to the Shotz discriminators. That, and the NAD phono sections is legendary. ...and they can generally be had for under $200 for a clean one..

Oops... Thatlast paragraph is only applicable to stereos. for HT, you're on your own but I do know NAD has a current production tuner/pre. I think it's the 163 but I'm unsure of the price.

You could also get hold of a mid priced receiver with pre outs if it has everything you need.

You might check out Anthem as well they have a nice pre amp / tuner combo. NAD's C162 mated with the C422 tuner would be nice combo as well.

Love them old AR9's. Bet they sound nice with those Adcom amps. :D :D
