Pre amp outputs compatibility with external amplifiers

Recently while trying to decide on an external amp to purchase, I read a couple of comments by reviewers who made a point that most pre-outs on AVRs, except Yamaha Aventage AVRs and Preamps, do not pump out enough power to meet specs on most external amps. I can't remember if that number was denoted as volts or what as I have not been able to find those reviews again, but I think it was volts. I remember one person made a call to various manufacturers, and discovered that the Yamahas could push out 1.5 (whatevers) vs 0.7 (whatevers) of a Pioneer Elite, and that most Amp manufacturers suggested 1.0 or higher. Other manufacturer AVRs fell somewhere in between. This kind of stuff bugs me so much because it feels like trolling in a way. Peppering the forums with doubt and contradictions. So, I submitted a question to Pioneer tech support (I own a Pioneeer Elite AVR) and after two weeks, not surprisingly, I have not received an answer. Also, I've NEVER seen any specs on the pre-outs on any AVRs. I've decided to check in with you guys to hopefully hear some facts. Is that BS or is it a real concern when connecting AVR pre-outs to an amp?

Most mid level avrs can put out 3vrms or more without clipping. What your looking at is their published minimum. You can check out some of the reviews here for exacts. The denon x34xx series is an example of good output at a great price. Outlaw audio avrs claim 8vrms. Also depends on the amp. You want an amp with at least 27dbs of gain.

You can’t trust many manufacturers' pre-amp voltage figures. A receiver I uses to use was spec’d at 1 volt, but I measured it at over 4 volts.
