Power Centers/Protection, Whats the Deal?

I currently just have an ok surge protector I dropped $75 on 9 yrs. ago. Looking at my system specs. (see sig....and Im looking at adding a Hsu stf-3 next week and a 50" HDTV Panasonic Plasma later in the year....prob. fall).....what should i be looking for in protecting my new hardware and providing "clean" power?

Please offer your recommended hardware. I appreciate your advice!

Add a Tripplite surge protector.

I agree 100%. The power conditioner companies would love to make you paranoid about what "might" be in your power, but if you aren't experiencing problems, you don't need that stuff. Surge protection, however, is a smart buy. Better to spend your money on things you REALLY need, like 1000-watt subwoofers.

I forgot to mention that I live in a suburb of Tulsa OK where we have some of the worse thunderstorms in the country and my power will frequently flutter/flicker….this concerns me. I read somewhere in regards to computer systems that its not the surges/spikes that can cause the most damage but the power fluctuations that can wreck the most havok on your hardware. Though this was in regards to pc’s that often have cheap power supplies…and I would assume that a denon receiver would have some protection against this…..I want to be sure. SO bearing this all in mind do you still just recommend the surge protector?

Surges, spikes, sags are all power line fluctuations. If you live in an area with a lot of "noisy" power (meaning common-mode and normal-mode noise), then you would probably benefit from a serious power line conditioner- which can be pretty expensive. A good surge supressor (like the Tripplite mentioned previously) is a good idea for anyone with any money invested in their system. This will protect your stuff, even the Denon, from the most damaging kinds of surges and spikes. Just don't let the marketing hype get the best of you.

I can also recommend Tripplite power strips. I have a bunch of the Ultra Isobar strips that I purchased very cheaply on Ebay all over the house protecting various electronic equipment. I started using Tripplite Isobars back in the early '90s to protect my computer equipment and I think they're the best of the bunch.

Well....I took your advice and here's what I got:

It was cheaper than I thought I might have to pay....which is good because I still have rear surrounds to buy and a sub....lol

And it will provide more peace of mind for me and it looks to be better than the one I am currently using. I may look for another one for my office, as I have two computers that are upper end machines and I have pput alot into them and yet there in cheap $6 or $8 dollar surge protectors...OUCH!!!
