Anyone looking for a secondary amp to add to their receiver?

Here's some good buys if you're not afraid to purchase used. These could prove to be much better deals when purchased with - say a Denon 3806/Yamaha 2600/4600 as opposed to buying a flagship receiver.

After seeing how pathetic some of these receivers really are, using a couple power amps looks like the way to go. Almost none of these receivers meet their spec while driving other channels. This data is a little old, but I’m sure things haven’t changed too much with the newer equipment.

After seeing how pathetic some of these receivers really are, using a couple power amps looks like the way to go. Almost none of these receivers meet their spec while driving other channels. This data is a little old, but I’m sure things haven’t changed too much with the newer equipment.

To that point...check out this not so long ago thread started by a perturbed Denon 5805 owner after Sound & Vision bench tested the $6000 flagship AVR.

The short version is that the so-called 170/channel rating was more like 120 with all channels driven. Perhaps manufacturers should advertise these power ratings as "all channels driven" but the problem is, in reality, no one ever
drives all seven channels (or even two) at max threshold for any substantial duration of time. The "per-channel" rating given are probably more reflective of the signal amplification required during a normal music/dialogue passage and not the random and infrequent peaks.

Perhaps the company used a different THD level to rate the amps, hence not the same power output?

Did anyone else notice those measurements are at 1kHz at clipping? Gene's bench tests are full 20-20kHz and under the clipping threshold, IE, where you'd actually be USING your receiver.

Yes, so that means those figures are INFLATED . Imagine what they would be at full bandwidth well below clipping .
