Power Amplifiers: NAD C272 vs Outlaw 2200M

Hello there,

I am brand new to this forum-my first post. I purchased a Yamaha RX-V4600 receiver, and just bought an NAD C272 power amp (150 W x 2- 8 Ohms) for the main speakers (er.. the ones I have not built yet). My questions is, should I purchase another NAD for the centre channel , and run it bridged as a mono amp, or would an Outlaw 2200M monoblock for the centre be a good choice. I am not sure if the sound quality/characteristics of these two would match..

I would appreciate any suggestions/recommednations you can offer me here.

Thanks!!

before you buy anything else you should get the mains built & try everything out that you allready have, the gear you have right now may be all you need.

I don't think your going hear much difference between the NAD and the Yammie. Very close in power. Try it, I think you will be surprised.

I think you'll hear significant difference between the NAD and the Yamaha if 1) your speakers have a really low sensitivity or 2) a low impedence (2 or 4 ohm). The NAD has more dynamic headroom and stronger performance with speakers of lower impedence.

Thanks very much for your responses. I purchased the NAD power amplifier because I have heard that it is difficult for most surround receivers to drive 7 speakers simultaneously. A common solution is to use seperate power amplifiers for the front 3 speakers-hence my puchase of the 2 channel NAD. My question was with respect to my centre channel speaker. Would it be a better sonic match to simply purchase another NAD C272 and bridge it, or would the sonic character of an Outlaw 2200M mono amp (22 watts) likely match fairly well. The NAD C272 power amplifier was ~ $900.00 CDN including taxes...

Thanks again for you help!!

.....I really believe the best response so far is from HiFiHoney....get the speakers built and in the mix with what power you have....the dedicated amp taking the front main's load off the receiver will probably allow the center to be adequately powered from the receiver along with the surrounds....if you're bound and determined to power the center with slave power, I doubt you would hear $600 difference with the Nad 272 over the Outlaw 2200....many here have this mono-block and are very pleased with it's performance....

I agree as well, listen to what you have before blowing more $ on power. I added the C272 to my system recently and am very pleased with the results. BTW, OUCH on the price you paid, things must be expensive on the west coast, I paid $550 plus tax for mine.

Have you considered returning the NAD (if this is a possibility) and getting a 3 channel amp? You could even get 3 behringer A500s and bridge them.

Hello nm2285,

A 3 channel amplifier was initially my preferred approach, but the choices appeared very limited. Adcom (seemingly mixed reviews) , Bryston ($$$$$), not sure what else. The NAD was available in my local market, and affordable, even by Canadian pricing standards :<(...
