Hi,
Can anyone share their experiences with NAD power amps. I am looking at the NAD T973 that has just come out and my dealer here is quoting a price of $1,800 for it. Do you think I should go for it....what are the good alternative at the same price range?

Thanks,

Suggest you check out ROTEL. They may have models in that price range. I personally consider Rotel a notch above the NAD brand, though both are good and known to be high-current in their amplifiers.

The NAD is a 7-channel poweramp. At that price Rotel only offers the RMB-1095 which is a 5-channel amp.

The big issue is the potential ground-loop problem which has plagued many 1095's causing a hum. This has been discussed extensively on the htguide forums.

That could be so true. Not to give offense to NAD users, but in the same price range, 5 channels vs 7 channels, doesn't that give you same indication of the quality of ROTEL over NAD on a per channel basis?

I will check out Rotel also. However I know several cases where the more expensive product has failed to do better that product priced lower. So i dont buy your argument that Rotel is better just because its more pricey. I have not done a A/B comparison of the two, I will try to do it. I am looking for 7.1 amp though.

Thanks for your input.

No, that doesn't mean anything. Sheer price of components is not the be all and end all of quality. Neither is weight of the product.

And no, I don't own either

Maybe not in general or totally. There are many exceptions. Like I said, price could be just an indication. Weight on the otherhand, when talking of amos, can be more indicative of better built and dynamic power ability courtesy of a generous power supply for which the use of large and heavy transformer, whether conventional or toroidal, is an indication. Added weight as a result of the use of metal chassis, rather than plastics, does not generally augur for good sound, though many brands claim they result in better interference shielding, but rather, they, in my experience, speak of better built and handling durability. These specs can make an amp more expensive than one that doesn't use them. Afterall, it is generally held that you deserve to get what you pay for, right?

Certainly. Weight of high quality components and the added cost of using those components are valid indication of better quality. I just see a lot of opinion that ignores what's making some products heavier, and that some product is overpriced. If nothing else I accomplished what I hoped with my response and got you to elaborate on your statement.

I don't claim to have the knowledge base you do, I was just worried that your cost statement without further elaboration might lead a newbie to purchase garbage just because it was more expensive.

Thanks for the insight.
