I was looking at Yamaha's website. They say the difference between the RX-V and the HTR is the rxv is rated at 20 - 20000Hz and htr at 1000Hz. Both can reproduce the full frequency responce of 20-20000Hz. What does this really mean? Is one better than the other? Or is it all just looks?

Amplifiers can output the most power at 1000hz, meaning the numbers on the HTR are somewhat of an exaggeration of the power the reciever can output at different frequencies. The full spectrum power rating is more of a true idea of the reciever's capabilities.

It has to do with the way they are rating power to appeal to different markets. Two similarly priced receivers from their RX-V and HTR lines are virtually identical but the latter is rated at 1kHz and higher distortion for a bigger power number than the RX-V rated at full bandwidth, lower distortion.

Its kinda a marketing game since they assume the RX-V line will be sold at retailers who attract more home theater savvy shoppers and the HTR line would be sold at retailers attracting more of the home theater enthusiast crowd.

So if the HTR is cheaper, it is just as good? The only difference is the gold lettering.

Actually, the HTR-5790 is rated from 20-20kHz. Go to www.yamaha.com & you can click on the manuals for all models & compare.

I think the HTR is just their lower line which leads up to the better RX-V series. Not sure as I've never taken the time to compare each & every model.

Gene said the two were virtually identical. I assume he meant in terms technical specifications other than their look and convenient features etc. The RX-V are rated differently to appeal to a different crowd, but they give you the same power the HTRs do.

The Yamaha site answers this question in the FAQ section and it is as others have said. They are identical except for cosmentic differences and the way the power is rated.
