I'm thinking for something I could afford but just wouldn't spend the money on...

I say a pair of B&W 803 diamonds $10000
2 McIntosh MC252 {1 bi-amped to each tower} $7000
1 McIntosh C50 2 ch preamp $6000
with a JL f212 sub $5000

It would only cost a little over $25K... Now For a money dont matter your a billionaire that just wants to spend what ever you can, thats easy...

Focal utopia 3's $100K with a pair of Krell Master reference amps {I believe they are like $140,000 each}, and a System III Sirius Turntable $75K, and a Emotiva XPA1 preamp :D $450....

Or maybe some of them $300K pyramid looking amps, I forget what they are called...

But for a system I would buy if my wife would let me have big speakers I say wharfedale Jade 7's $4100
that new mark levinson pre amp with a pair of his mono blocks $10K+
JL f212 $5K

But thats just a dream, my wife wouldnt be too happy if I spent $20K on a system and Im not allowed to have large speakers... They have to meet her size requirements before they come in the house, lol...

For now I have to settle for my cheap 2.2 system, but it does the job, actually pretty well..

Speakers: Salk SS12/The Next Step $18,000/$4,000+construction costs
Subwoofer: Dual Funk Audio TSAD 18.3 $10,000
Amps: AB Cinema Series Mono-blocks $10,000
Receiver: Don't have a dream receiver $5,000
Transport: Oppo BDP-XXX $1000

Total:~$44,000/~34,000

Possible if I build up to it, but at the top end of possible. Plus, I like the direction I'm heading now, which has a better balance between HT and music.

Fortunately, I've got relatively pedestrian tastes. Unfortunately, I've got widely varying tastes in speakers. Keeping $$$ in mind since the OP mentions this as being something that I should be able to afford some day, I'd probably go with two separate systems.

1. Klipschorns and a modest integrated amplifier.

2. Probably something from Salk or Philharmonic combined with a bit meatier of an amplifier.

This unsurprisingly isn't a quantum leap from what I have now.

Ugh... don't make me think like this!

What is my plan? I want to build the Zaph ZRT 2.5's. I love the design, and recognize the value, and it will give me something to tinker with for a while.

I've got the cash for the Status 8T's, but have actual investments to build before I invest in my hearing loss :) Hell I've never owned a car, full time motorcyclist here!

That and I think I'd need to double up the floor joists to accomodate the weight...

I'm with Steve on this. There is so much great gear that doesn't cost a bomb. I love my current 2 channel set up (computer source -> squeezebox touch -> outlaw 2150 receiver -> PSB imagine B speakers. I still want a pair of maggies, though :D

This is a tough one but based on some favs of mine a system built like this would be pretty cool and yet still not totally nutso in price.

I'll put some things as multiples to which I'd have to decide on one only once I get the cash to build such a system.:D

-----------------

From these choices I'd be very happy with a top end quality stereo system. Of course custom outfitting my stereo room and cabinetry for all media as well as a quality gear stand etc. would finish it all off. I picture a nice quaint room at least 14 ft wide by 20 ft long with at least 8ft ceiling hopefully higher and/or vaulted design. Proper but judicial use of quality room treatments too. It would be a stunning looking stereo room with enough seating in the main position for 3 people sitting on a top quality leather sofa. Seated at least 12 ft. from the main speakers within the set up triangle system of seating to left/right speaker set up. Behind which a set of easy to move into room and higher seated chairs sorta like Directors chairs to be "cheap seats" used for larger listening groups.

NICE SYSTEM IN MY OPINION!
