Post HD-DVD Questions Here..

I have a few questions about HD-DVD... Is there an actual release date stated for HD-DVD players? If so does anyone have any idea what these players might cost? How long after the players are available will there be a good selection of software to choose from?

I remember the urgent need I felt to go buy a DVD player when they first came out in 97. I paid $500 for a Panasonic DVD player not long after they were available. One thing I remember is it took quite a while for the movies to become available. It also sucked going to Blockbuster and other video stores when trying to rent a DVD. I even remember when the DVD selection at Best Buy was smaller than their SACD/DVD-A section is now.Should we expect the release of HD-DVD to be similar to its older brother?

From a technical view..Will these players send the HD signal via Component Video or will those of us with an older HD set have to buy a new TV with DVI or HDMI? (I have had my HDTV for over 3 years now.) Should we expect a Universal HD-DVD player that will play our Hi-Rez music as well?

I am sure there are several of you that have similar questions about HD-DVD as well. If so feel free to post them here. For those of you who are already informed on this new format please share with us what you know, so we all can better know what to expect.

You can bet that if/when one of these formats becomes available that it WON'T be sending its HD signal over component connections.

HD DVD player/recorder?

Does this meaning Q4 will bring HD DVD "players" only?...or will it include HD recording functions as well? :)

Well, thank god I haven't bought my DVD player yet, looks like I;ll just buy a cheapie and what til next year to buy one which I plan on holding on to for awhile.

So what the best <300 DVD (with SACD and DVD-A) out there right now?

It could, but I think the powers that be are going to do everything they can to instill a copy protection restriction (like HDCP) to prevent "theft" of their product. Just my guess.

I am not sure this is the best option available, it can't be too bad of a player for its price. It is the Onkyo DV-SP502 and it can be found (Here )

I had originally thought along the same lines. Buy a cheap universal player now and save up for a HD-DVD player. Well I really regretted not buying a better player after going through 2 cheap Pioneer 578a dvd players since August. I got so sick and tired of the POS I finally decided to start shopping for another player. I got lucky and found a Denon 2200 for a great price at a local Ultimate. Seeing how well this player performs compared to the 578a it really makes me wish I would have bought one back in August. Just my two cents.

I also think I may wait for a while before I buy into the DVD-HD players anyways. To many unknowns at this point in time for me to get excited about it.

I'm looking to get the denon 2910, but I really don't want to drop 600 bucks for a dvd player that will be semi obsolete at the end of the year. I'm thinking of going with the sony DVP-NS975V.

I considered the 578A, what problems did you have?

thanks,
-chris

First machine I brought home did not output DD or DTS.
The second one started skipping no matter what disc I put in.

I have heard of other people having good luck with them, especially the 563a.
I may have just had an unlucky streak. The player I owned before the Pioneer was a Sony. It was a great machine. I had it for nearly 2 years with no problems. My advice would be to buy the Denon. It may become "obsolete" in the video dept. However I don't think we will see any HD-DVD with Hi-Rez DVD-A and SACD anytime soon. So I bought mine with that in mind. So if I do buy a HD machine I will use the Denon for audio.

Though they may noy output using component, I would hope they would. At the very least they should use it to send ED (480p) signals so your older HD sets would not become obsolete.

You can collect on that bet now and put it in the bank. :)

Great News!

I just talked with an representative with New Medium Enterprises. Here is my understanding on HD DVD & Blue Rays Technology. They have not increased their layer capacity to hold more data they have actually designed a better blue lazer which will read a smaller pitch hence giving more capacity. What this does actually hurts us in the pocket book. Now due to this new lazer other things have to be added to the player to play our old non hd dvd's hence adding additional cost! And you guys are right we will all need new TV's if we do not have HDMI or the other format DVDI I think it is called.

We should support New Medium Enterprises with their RED Laser 20 layer disc! Guess what they can do. They can take your current player and add 1 chip and whamo you have HD TV! Their players will only be $250 and will be out at the end of this year. The representative said they are hated by HD DVD and Blue Ray because their product is better and cheaper. Also New Medium Enterprises players will use component cables...no new TV! Screw Blue Ray and HD DVD! New Medium stated to me that they have many BIG companies giving them face time and it is looking really good! Also she stated that they were not planning to sell out.......they want it all!
