Popping in new speakers

Hi everybody, just looking for some advice.

I recently bought brand new Polk RM250 5.1 surround system and a new Onkyo TR-605 receiver. I have had them for about three weeks and I have been hearing a slight popping sound from the speakers. It comes from all of them but at different times, also on all outputs. Sometimes it is more frequent than others.

I'm wondering if it is common for new speakers to do this, if it is something else? Any tips or advice would be great.

Thanks,
Kevin

Do you have them set to small in your speaker config?

A few things to check.....

1. make sure speaker wire is secured- A loose wire can cause popping.

2. make sure polarity is not crossed

3. Dont turn volume to insane levels

This is a little concerning. It could mean all your speaker connections have issues. Are you using non-terminated wires? Make sure there are no loose strands shorting at the binding posts, both at the amp and speaker.

also on all outputs
If you check all your wires and do not come across any loose connections or fix them, and the symptom persists, it could mean that your receiver has internal issues. Have the receiver replaced just to be on the safe side.

I am using non terminated wires. I have spring clips on the speakers and screw binders on the receiver. How can I get a better connection on each of those?

There isn't a better connection than bare wire, so that isn't the issue. He was simply saying to make sure the connections themselves were solid.

I've been having popping with my Onkyo SR605 as well. Also for some reason the Audyssey equalizer muffles the crap out of the highs on my setup. I don't have any idea why it is doing this.

I am currently attributing both causes to a possibly defective unit. I am trying to exchange it with circuit city but they are out of stock in pretty much all of their stores.

So it just happens at random? Or does it happen when changing inputs, volume etc. If it happens at random, check to see that all speaker wires do not have any loose strands, otherwise it is something wrong with the receiver. I would think that the receiver would go into protect mode, if another wire was making contact where it should not.

I checked all of the connections. Everything seems to be fine, no loose wires, no crossed polarities. Problem still prersists, although I have noticed it seems to be happening more on dvd input and cable input than when I play through my ipod or games. I guess I'll take it back to the store and see what they can do for me.
Thanks for all the help.

Check the setup first.

Do you have them set to small in your speaker config?
If the speakers are not configured correctly as "SMALL" it would be easy to exceed the capabilities of those Polk speakers and bottom out the woofers causing popping or other distortion. Check the specs on the speakers, but an 80Hz or 100Hz crossover should be appropriate.

FWIW when I exchanged my onkyo 605 for another one, the popping went away. It was happening intermittently from all speakers, so it more than likely wasn't a wiring issue.

I think many of the onkyo 605 units truly are defective. My new one is working just fine though.

How funny. I read the title as "Pooping in new speakers". I was like, "Hey, whatever floats your boat." :D

I get the same popping with some content from my 605 - usually a few but certainly not all SD DVD's. I don't seem to hear it on DTV, over the air antenna broadcasts or Hi Def discs. I think it might be an issue with the processor in the Onkyo on some program material. I doubt seriously that it is the speakers. I doubt the receiver is defective either or, if it is, it is the design that is defective and not your particular unit. I don't pay attention to it any longer. It doesn't crop up very often and, when it does, I just listen past it.

Popping too

Ok I am having the same problems. I checked all my connections and they are fine. I called Onkyo they told me to reset to factory specs and try it but if not return it and get a new one. So I called the store I purchased from and told them I am connected my HDMI and I have 5.1 Bose. He started to bash Bose for their inferior construction and how Bose trys to tell the receiver how the sound should come out and that is why I might be having that problem. Anyway I am going to try the reset to factory specs if it doen't work then I will try my old speakers. If I don't hear popping with old speakers then I know it is my Bose, but I doubt it. I have my DTV and DVD hooked up via HDMI. I hear the poping sound through both.

Ah! You have an Onkyo 605. So do I. My receiver does the same thing. I'm pretty sure it is a design flaw in the receiver. Your speakers are probably just fine. I wish I still had the Pioneer. I need to upgrade that receiver. In time it will drive me nuts.
