Poor QC: Toshiba MX195 56" 1080p DLP Display

A few weeks ago I purchased a Toshiba MX195 1080p DLP Display. I was most impressed with the picture and sound quality and thought I found a killer display for my family room system.

Two weeks later, the fan noise became unbearably loud while a high frequency switching power supply noise could be heard from the speakers. My local retailer Sound Advice promptly switched out the defective display for a brand new unit.

Two days later the same problem returned, but on a much LARGER and LOUDER scale. This time the displays fan would intermittently buzz at nearly 70dB while the picture would flicker. When the fan went quiet, you could still hear grinding and buzzing sounds inside the unit.

I am truly saddened by the poor quality control of Toshiba with this model as I really liked this display. I hope this just an isolated batch of bad displays and not a major design flaw.

In 2 weeks I will take delivery of the new Samsung HLS-5688W with much higher hopes.

Haven't you ever heard that you can only complain to people above you? You're the top dog!! You'll have to take your problems to a higher power (if such a person exists) :D . Just kidding :) .

I haven't had much luck with anything Toshiba, so I stear clear of them as a general rule. A friend of mine has a 57" rear projection Toshiba, and it has held up well for him for quite a few years - but that's not exactly cutting edge technology or anything.

Getting new electronics home and having them fail is one of the worst feelings. I hope things go better with the Samsung, Gene.

I have had good luck with Toshiba. My parents bought a Toshiba tv back when the channel selectors where still dials and that tv lasted 20 years. (I can still hear my dad yelling about us kids spinning the dial too fast!):D I had one Toshiba vcr/dvd combo that the vcr side died on last year when either my wife or 4 year old son tried to jam a tape in crooked. so I guess thats a 50/50 thing shouldn't be able to do that and they shouldn't have done that.:( Oh well, I bought the cheap combo model for the family room because of space and my son.

I would bet the defect is model related but would like to hear if others have had problems with anything Toshiba.

Good luck with the other display Gene.

p.s. For what it's worth, more than one store has told me that the defect return rate on Sony tv's is higher than Toshiba.

I am not surprised at this either. I originally got a Mitsubishi 1080p 52" DLP display that died after 1 month usage. Thus I switched to Toshiba.

I also have a Sceptre 37" 1080p LCD that won't sync up properly with the OSD of my receiver.

I am a bit annoyed by the lack of QC and reliability with the most recent round of displays I have had experience with.

Hopefully the Samsung will improve my luck.
