What would you like to see as the next technology features integrated into your next receiver purchase?

This is in response to the latest product news briefing from Yamaha in regards to offering XM-Radio ready features in their latest receiver lineup but no HDMI support.

Please list any features that you would like see in the evolution of receiver technology.

I see DVI and HDMI being more important for the use of a plasma or lcd flat screen monitors. They eliminate the need for A/V cables from the receiver to the monitor, as well as provide the best transfer of signal. HDMI includes audio, while DVI does not. My vote is for more HDMI hookups on the new receivers.

Sirius and XM is a "pay type" medium like cable tv via satellite that come with their own portable receivers. We'll see how Howard Stern does next year with the new technolog after choosing to leave the free air waves. I'm guessing most receivers in the near future will jump on one of these bandwagons sooner or later. Heck, no one thought anyone would ever pay for tv like cable. Who doesn't have cable or satellite tv???

I edited the poll to add Firewire and since HDMI and DVI are basically the same (for purposes of this poll) I combined them...

I voted for Firewire, for me in the immediate future it would be nice to only have one cable for multi-channel music.

I have a CRT RPTV that has HDMI & very much would like to see a receiver with HDMI switching - one single cable from receiver to TV! I was thinking about holding off on buying a receiver until HDMI switching was available but my Onkyo was Pro-Logic without any opticial inputs and thats what drove me to the RX-V1500. The only reason I got the 1500 instead of the 2500 with 3 component inputs was because my CRT RPTV had a HDMI port that would be used to connect the SAT receiver.

I voted for Firewire (one cable, already approved for SACD, unlike HDMI AFAIK), and Other -- Other in this case being, built-in wireless reception. I have all 900 CDs in my collection on a hard drive as flac files. Currently I decode them in a laptop and send that output to my AVR (Pioneer 56txi) via USB cable. I'd like to eliminate the cable.

Interestingly Onkyo/Integra are supposedly releasing XM and Sirius modules for their flagship modules later in the year. I guess these better radio formats are gaining momentum.

I'd like to see customisable serial port output on switching and other events. This would allow users to link outboard scalers with DVI/HDMI switching and processing at no cost to ease of use.

Does anybody really use a full-blown receiver to listen to the radio anymore ? if you're going to power up, why not put in a CD or SACD or DVD-audio ?

I would like to see a receiver process any video input to use Faroudja upscaling or that Teranex technology that Ray is fond of....

Another personal favorite would be to put the HDTV tuner and cable card into the receiver. Let's get rid of the junk amplifiers and speakers that take up so much room and cost in the TV sets and have there be nothing more than a tube hanging on the wall (maybe fed by a switchable HDMI cable...)

Seems like most ppl who took the time to vote and reply appear to be anxious for HDMI as well.

Thanks everyone who voted! I didn't think I was in left field when I thought the next emerging tech. in Receivers should be HDMI but I needed to check.

It always good to have someone else check your pulse also ;)

All of those features have merit, let's hope Spring brings lots of cool new gear!

Have a great day!
