i dont really support either format, other than blue ray ps3 games.

im hoping the maxell holographic discs come out and turn out to be better than either of the two, then ill support them.

but until then blue ray seems to be better.

I did not vote. I do not care which one wins. I will buy the less than $200 universal player and be able to play both formats. :)

Blu-ray's success IMO is entirely dependent on PS3. My first DVD player was my PS2 in oct 2000. At that time, DVD players were almost as expensive as the PS2 itself but not out of a regular Joe's reach. However, PS3 will be significantly cheaper than any Bluray or HDDVD player when it's out in Nov 06. That could tip the scales in Blu-ray's favor. To me, the gain we saw from VHS to DVD in practicality, resolution increase, cool factor, far exceeds what High Def resolution can do over DVD. It was a revolution in media storage. Now it's simply an evolution. And people will only cater to it is if the format is well advertized (ala Apple's I-POD).

However, I don't think I'm alone in saying that I'm spoiled by Nintendo Gamecube's small optical disc, or the PSP UMDs compact size. It's only a matter of time before someone finds a way to stash 50gb of space on 60mm. That's what I'd really like to see.

Blu-Ray

I like it as a backup medium for my computers. In addition, it apparently will do well with movies?

Going to see Demos of both machines this Friday.

Not being a buyer of movies on DVD, I will wait to see what Video rental stores offer in HD.

On the other hand I am a purchaser of Concerts on DVD. I would be interested to hear lossless audio in DD Plus or DTS-HD and see from there.

Some more to think about!

One thing I have noticed is the difference in price of the players so far!

Sony Blu-Ray Model BDP-S1 $999.95 Avail Late July or August
Allthough the PS3 will play Blu-Ray $300est Avail Nov

Toshiba HD-A1 $499.99 Available Late March or early April

LG is working on a player to play both due late summer. Price unknown

As good as the video quality is now, on dvds, I don't see that there will be enough difference to get me to spend all that money, to get setup for the new formats. I also refuse to pay $30 for a dvd.

I'd like to see them take the same route as dvd-a and sacd music. That is, to be there for those that want it, and are willing and able to spend the money.
