Polk Speakers and what to get?

I am looking to get a nicer surround system for my home. I have a friend who professionally installs speakers and I can get around a 25% discount on Polk speakers. (Also discount for Bose, Atlantic Technology, and Harman Kardon). I decided on Polk, it seems to be the best value for the money.

I'm looking to put the speakers with a HK 335 or 635 which I also get a 25% discount on. All in all, I'm looking to spend 1000-1200 bucks but wouldn't complain on less. I just want the most for my money.

The room is a 28x22 area, although the actual theater area is 17x17.

I was looking at the RM20's or RM6900's but I am not sure what the real difference is between the two. Also would building a 5.1 Polk set up instead of the 20's or 6900's be a better idea? At this point I have information overload and not sure what the best route is.

Also I know it's not the Receiver forum, but whats the main difference between the 335 and 635? and is the the 635 worth the extra money?

Thanks for any help,

Spacehog

I think that the satellites would be too small for your room size. You may be better off with the RTi series. Although I am not sure if the the H/K 635 can handle 4 ohm speakers, the LSi Series may also a good fit.

Not sure why you are looking at satellites, but you will get far better sound from a larger cabinet-style speaker (bookshelf or tower).

I've heard the new RM systems and they are half decent, but other than a discounted price, they aren't really worth what they're charging for them. I agree with lou, whether they are decent or not, they will not fill a room that size well. I'd be looking at Polks Monitor or RTi line at minimum.

635 will be a noticable step up in power, which you're going to need for a room that size.

Hi Spacehog and welcome to the Forum.

I would recommend at least bookshelfs.
Fronts RTi6
Centre CSi3
Surround RTi4
Total $~1000

Other speakers
Fronts Monitor 50 (tower)
Centre CS1
Surround Monitor 30
Not sure on cost

If you could push the $ a bit
Fronts RTi8
Centre CSi3
Surround FXi3

The HK 635 won't have trouble with these speakers

I just found out I can get a discount on the JBL Northridge E line. What are the opinions on that?

Stay with the RTi line, much higher end than JBL. BJP's 1st and 3rd recommedation is excellent.

Definitely opt for the 635 receiver. Polks are known to be power hogs, so you're going to need all the juice you can afford.
