Buckeye,

Do you know if Frys will honor this price for in store pick-up?
I'm not sure. We don't have Fry's here in Ohio. Shipping for me is under $18 each, so it wouldn't be worth it even if they had a store across town. These boxes are huge, and the speakers weigh a ton.

I've been told if you order them separately, the shipping is a lot less. Don't order them as a pair.

I am pretty sure the pricing is good in store as well.

Ah, that may be it because when I got a shipping estimate for a pair it was $121 and we have a couple Fry's up in Tucson.

Edit- $36 ea. shipped individually for me.

If you plan to pick them up, check with the store first, since their policy is they don't match the website if there is a difference in price. For movies though, I have always found the pricing to be the same; that may not be the case for speakers and I have run into that for computer items as well.

I need to head up there this weekend anyways and give them a listen too.

So I see the statement that the RTi10 are hard to drive over and over. Based on the specs they would seem to be just another speaker in a long list of similar speakers from other manufacturers.

So what is it about the Polk that makes them hard to drive? It must be that they have a huge low impedance dip somewhere across the frequency range because the stated specs of 8 Ohm nominal and 90 dB sensitivity imply that they are easy to drive.

I might pull the trigger on these but if I can actually talk my wife into it (sometimes she's all for great bargains!!) I would think getting the rti10's would be better than the RTi8's even if I have a mid-fi receiver, do the rti10's sound bad with a mid-fi receiver or they just don't really shine with one????

It seems like you could break even on ebay selling these speakers if you didn't like them. Atleast that's what I'll tell my wife :)

I have no personal experience with them but I have been eyeing them as a potential 'upgrade' from my JBLs.

What I have seen stated is that they require a lot of power to 'sound their best'. To me that is meaningless and is akin to saying they don't sound good unless they are delivering ear splitting SPL levels. To each his own and all that but I have a hard time believing they sound horrible at low levels with a mid-fi receiver unless there is a definitive technical reason - like a huge low impedance dip in the frequency response that would give a mid-fi receiver trouble.

well it was a big strike out with my wife

...something about saving for our baby, due in June, I can't really argue with that

Maybe when Polk discontinues the RTi-A series in 5-7 years I'll jump on those :)

Here's a multi-meter checking the impedance on the RTi10's with straps on (running all drivers); bottom only (dual 7" woofers); and top (tweeter and mid bass driver).

So for the normal case where the straps are attached and you are single-amping from a receiver the impedance is 4 ohms?

Technically, they're still 8 ohm nominal, but your receiver will see a 4 ohm load regardless. That's why people call these towers "pigs."

Of course I never got to make it up there to listen to them this past weekend either.
