Polk PSW-10 Vs Onix X-sub

I’m not an audioholic but I’m hoping someone can advise me. I purchased a Polk PSW-10 subwoofer which is O.K. but I was considering purchasing an Onix X-sub instead. They are comparably priced. I really won’t spend more than $250. Would the X-sub be better? Would there be a noticeable difference between the two? Since the X-sub is internet only I would have to pay back and forth shipping if I didn’t like it. Any feedback would be appreciated.

My info:

System used for music and movies
Room 19’ X 16’
Harmon Kardon AVR-135 receiver
JBL Northridge E30 main speakers
JBL Northridge EC25 center
JBL Northridge E10 surround

I'll assume you've read this... http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/loudspeakers/Onixxsubp1.php

Polk in general are not known for producing quality subs. I think the x-sub would would be the better choice. You could always get a second one later on.

Another recommended ID sub would be the BIC Acoustech H-100 for about $230.
Yes I read that review and that piqued my interest. The Polk is kind of BLAH. I will research the H-100 and thanks for your feedback

Long story short I have not been impressed with polk subs in my experience.

I've heard two Polk subs in my day the psw303 (which is more money than the PSW10). The other is an older Polk sub (12" driver @ 250 watts RMS, which was $350.00 new back in 2000).

I liked the velodyne VX-10 better than the psw303 in overall output, clarity, and extension, I ended up buying the VX-10. The 12" sub I've heard from polk is pretty boomy and does not have a very linear frequency response, I'm sure there's some room gain to blame for the sub performance but I think for overall sound quality my VX-10 is better than both subs from Polk.

It seems that Crutchfield and other dealers of Polk are always running "specials" where if you buy a Polk home theater speaker package, they will throw in a PSW10 for free. That has got to say something about that sub!

I have not heard the Onix x-sub.

Good luck

I am not a fan of Polk subs either. My cousin has one, not sure which one, but in any case it is a boomy little powered woofer. (real subwoofers deliver bass at or below 20Hz and I wouldn't put cheaper Polk subs up to the task of doing so)

Well, I want to extend a warm thanks to those who responded with feedback. In some hobby forums to which I subscribe such newbie questions are mostly ignored so I appreciate the generous response. I ordered the BIC Acoustech H-100 from Sound Distributors in Las Vegas and got it in two days. I put it up against the Polk and it was so much better. It was cleaner, punchier and the bass had a rounder sound. The Polk PSW-10 went back to C.C. and I'm happy with the decision. Thanks again!!
